Your High Adventure Holidays FAQs – Everything Families Ask Before Booking

Booking a family adventure holiday is exciting, but it’s completely normal to have questions before you commit. From food and accommodation to travel and suitability for different ages, families want to know exactly what to expect.

At High Adventure Holidays, we welcome thousands of families and school groups every year and these are some of the most common questions we’re asked. We hope this guide helps you decide whether one of our Yorkshire-based adventure holidays is right for your family.

What Activities Will We Be Doing?

One of the most common questions we’re asked is what a typical week at High Adventure Holidays actually looks like. Our six-night family adventure holiday is carefully planned to give a great balance of exciting activities, time outdoors, chances to relax and plenty of shared family experiences.

Here’s an overview of what your week might look like:

Saturday – Welcome to High Adventure

Arrive with us in the afternoon, settle into your accommodation and enjoy a relaxed first evening. This is a great chance to meet other families, enjoy dinner together and find out what’s in store for the week ahead. You’re welcome to make use of our onsite bar and social spaces, both indoors and outdoors, before enjoying some evening entertainment.

Sunday – Caves & Dales Day

After breakfast, we head out into the Yorkshire Dales. You’ll visit the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct before exploring limestone caves in the Ribblehead area. These caves are suitable for a range of abilities, with experienced instructors guiding you every step of the way.Later, there’s time to explore a local Dales town before returning to the centre for dinner and evening entertainment.

Monday – High Ropes, Zipline & Earl Crag

The morning is spent enjoying our onsite high ropes course and zipline, with four different sections to challenge and excite all ages. After lunch, we head to Earl Crag, where you’ll explore this dramatic landscape, climb inside Lunds Tower and try your hand at weaselling. The evening is spent relaxing back at the centre.

Tuesday – Watersports Day

We travel by minibus to a local reservoir for a full day of watersports, including canoeing, raft building and stand-up paddleboarding. If you’d prefer a quieter day, we can drop you in Oakworth, famous for The Railway Children, where you can enjoy a steam train ride (additional cost). After a full day out, it’s back to the centre for dinner and evening entertainment.

Wednesday – Malham Cove & Goredale Scar

Today is all about exploring some of the most spectacular scenery in the Yorkshire Dales. You’ll visit Malham Cove, with the option to walk to the top for incredible views, before heading through Janet’s Foss waterfall and on to Goredale Scar. There’s scrambling, exploring and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the landscape. In the evening, parents can opt for our ‘parents’ night off’ service or stay in and relax.

The morning focuses on indoor climbing, with routes that can be made as easy or challenging as you like.In the afternoon, you’ll try archery (with some friendly inter-family competition) followed by bushcraft activities. After another action-packed day, it’s time to unwind with dinner and evening entertainment.

Friday – Orienteering & Farewells

The week finishes with an orienteering competition to keep the children entertained while you pack. Check-out is at 1.30pm, but you’re free to leave earlier if you wish.A great end to an unforgettable week of adventure.

All activities are fully supervised by our experienced instructors, and all specialist equipment is provided. You’re welcome to take part as much or as little as you like — it’s your holiday, after all.

Catering for Fussy Eaters

If your child is a fussy eater, you’re definitely not alone — and yes, we can cater for them.

Our main menu is designed with families in mind, but we understand that some children have a very limited range of foods they’ll eat. We’re well prepared for this and even keep items like chicken nuggets in the freezer specifically for those moments.

While we can’t cook lots of entirely separate meals, we’re very happy to make reasonable adjustments where possible — for example, serving pasta and sauce separately or swapping a main meal for nuggets. The key thing is to let us know in advance.

You’re also welcome to bring additional food for your child if that helps, and we can provide access to a fridge on request.

Food Allergies and Dietary Requirements

We can cater for food allergies and dietary requirements, but it’s essential that you provide full details at the time of booking.

Once we have this information, we’ll review it carefully and contact you if we have any questions or concerns. Our aim is always to ensure meals are safe, suitable and stress-free for everyone.

What Are the Rooms Like?

Our accommodation is clean, comfortable and practical for family adventure holidays.

Many of our rooms are dormitory-style with bunk beds, which works well for families and groups, but we also have some rooms with single beds. You can choose between ensuite and non-ensuite options depending on your preference.

For non-ensuite rooms, shared toilets and showers are located within the same building and always close by. These facilities have separate shower and toilet cubicles, so privacy is never an issue.

Is the Holiday Suitable for Children with ADHD or Autism?

Yes — we welcome all children.

Our staff are highly experienced in working with young people with a wide range of needs, including ADHD and autism. Outdoor activity holidays can be particularly beneficial, offering structure, routine, fresh air and plenty of physical activity.

Many children thrive in this environment, building confidence through hands-on experiences, teamwork and time spent outdoors in a supportive and understanding setting.

Do Parents Have to Take Part in Every Activity?

Not at all.

All activities are included for everyone, and you’re more than welcome to join in — but there’s no pressure. If you’d rather watch from the sidelines, relax, or take a break, that’s perfectly fine too.

This is your holiday as much as your child’s.

Is the Holiday Suitable for Teenagers?

Absolutely. Our holidays are designed to appeal to adults, children and teenagers alike.

The activities suit a wide age range, and wherever possible, we group participants by age. Teenagers won’t feel like the holiday is “too young” for them — many teens join us every year and have an amazing time.

At the same time, the holiday works just as well for younger children and is suitable for ages 5 and up.

What Do I Need to Bring?

We provide all specialist equipment needed for activities, including wetsuits for water sports.

You’ll just need to bring:

  • Comfortable everyday clothes

  • A waterproof jacket (just in case)

  • Shoes or trainers suitable for walking

  • Towels

We provide bedding, and we also have a large drying room if you need to dry clothes or footwear during your stay.

Can I Travel by Train?

Yes — getting to us by train is simple and convenient.

Our nearest station is Steeton & Silsden, just a 10-minute taxi ride away. Once you arrive, you won’t need a car during your stay until it’s time to head back.

We’re just one direct train transfer from Leeds, with the journey taking around 25 minutes. Leeds has direct rail connections from Birmingham and London, making travel straightforward even if you’re coming from further afield.
